This course aims to introduce the students to a new genre, cli-fi. In part one, the students learn to identify traits of the genre and the course provides them with a language to discuss fiction that deals with climate change. In part two they train their analytical skills working with a short story, and they deepen their understanding of the genre, producing texts on their own. The overall goal of the course is also to get the students to reflect on the role of literature in the global pursuit of a sustainable future. .

This teaching material can be used in interdisciplinary projects in which English and subjects such as social studies, biology and geography collaborate on themes like sustainability, biodiversity or climate change. It is intended to cover 3-5 lessons of 90 minutes depending on how much time the students are given to write their own stories and how any other subjects come into play. The teaching material can be used for both A and B levels.

1. Ask the class if they have heard of the genre Climate Fiction (cli-fi). What would they expect to find in a piece of cli-fi?
2. The class reads the article “Our House, Our Fire, Our Fiction” by Liz Jensen.
3. The students discuss the following questions in pairs:
- Liz Jensen refers to many different pieces of cli-fi in her article. Do you know any of them? If yes, what do you remember about the stories? If no, choose one and find a short summary online.
- Explain the following quote from the article in your own words. Look up words you don’t understand.
“If the climate emergency challenges the imagination by demanding that we re-frame our relationship to the ecosystem that sustains us, then that shift of perception calls for powerful new stories, and powerful new ways of telling them”.
- Find as many traits of the genre cli-fi as you can in the article.
- Watch the trailer for the film The Road on YouTube. Can you identify some of the traits that you just listed?
- Based on what you have read, write a definition of the genre cli-fi in your own words.

Each pair finds another pair and the groups now discuss their answers and agree on a definition of cli-fi. The class share their definitions on a shared platform such as Google docs or Padlet.
